Statement On Lenovo Superfish

Lenovo recently came under fire for being caught preloading laptops with a program called Superfish. The program contained a security flaw which allowed users’ web connections to be hijacked and spied on. Superfish is considered “adware”, software that automatically displays advertisements.

However, a Lenovo spokesman reported, “We have thoroughly investigated this technology and do not find any evidence to substantiate security concerns.” Superfish “does not profile nor monitor user behavior. It does not record user information. It does not know who the user is. Users are not tracked nor re-targeted,” according to Re/Code.

Lenovo did not install Superfish on any ThinkPad notebooks, nor any desktops, workstations, servers, tablets, or phones. The only laptops that were preloaded with the software were the following consumer model notebooks:  Z-series, Y-Series, U-Series, G-Series, S-Series, Flex-Series, Yoga, Miix and E-Series. Superfish only affects these laptops shipped between September and December of 2014.

No devices sold from catmandu will contain Superfish.

At catmandu, with our commitment to excellence and to our customers, we only sell high-end Lenovo products. You will not find any of the consumer models in our locations.

Lenovo will not be preloading Superfish on any device in the future and they are making every effort to inform consumers of the risks of not uninstalling Superfish. In a statement to their retailers, they stated, “We know that millions of people rely on our devices every day, and it is our responsibility to deliver quality, reliability, innovation and security to each and every customer.”

Removal of the adware is relatively simple. You can find the instructions here, or you can bring your laptop to one of the catmandu locations.

At catmandu, we continue to stand behind the Lenovo product line.

John Deere & catmandu

John Deere and catmandu. Weird combination, right? What could an outdoor and farm equipment company have in common with a tech company? We live in an agricultural community here in Amarillo, TX. Our city thrives on the rampant production agriculture that occurs outside the city limits.

For miles and miles into the distance, all you can see is fields of wheat, corn, and sorghum blanketing the landscape with a lot of cattle herds mixed in. And what brand of equipment do you normally see tilling the soil, planting the seeds, and eventually harvesting the crops? John Deere. Why? Because they’re the best in the business and John Deere equipment is the industry standard.

At catmandu, we sell Lenovo brand laptops, desktops, and tablets. We like to say that Lenovo is the John Deere of PCs because Lenovo is the #1 PC maker in the world and has the lowest failure rate.

At catmandu, we could sell HP, Toshiba, or Dell systems and honestly, we would make a lot more money if we did because 1) computer brands like these are cheaper, therefore we would be able to charge a higher mark-up and still sell more and 2) the computers would fail more often, causing the customer to come into catmandu and spend more money trying to fix the problems that will inevitably crop up. We’ve seen too many one month old laptops come through our doors with a myriad of issues and we couldn’t live with ourselves if those were the laptops we were selling.

At catmandu, as our motto states, “everything matters.” Especially our customers. We want to sell you the best products in the world. You deserve nothing less than excellence from us. That’s why we only sell Lenovo, the industry standard and the John Deere of computers.

Lenovo Quietly Releases Smartband SW-B100 Specs

Lenovo Quietly Releases Smartband SW-B100 Specs

It was a matter of time that Lenovo joined the Smartwatch elite with Google and Apple.  Lenovo gave the public a “hint” of the upcoming gadget when the original FCC Filing was made. Technically, the new device isn’t a smartwatch but rather a smartband. Just like the Samsung Gear Fit, the Lenovo Smartband SW-B100 is an activity tracker that tracks and graphs health analytics. Many of the features resemble the typical smartwatch, but what makes this one different is that the SW-B100 has a security feature that locks or unlocks a PC.

Windows Central was the first to spot the Smartband SW-B100 leak on the company site.  The Smartband will come in two different colors blue and orange with a square display screen. Lenovo hasn’t released a price point yet, but  has confirmed that the device will run on Android 4.3 and iOS 7.1 or higher.

Amarillo 34th Street Construction Projected To Last Through January 2015 – Don’t Forget About Local Businesses

It’s summer-time in Amarillo and that means construction projects are taking place all over the city. One of the larger projects is the complete curb-to-curb renovation of 34th street between Coulter & Soncy. Of course there are pros and cons to construction projects of this scope.

First, 34th street has been needing work for some time and that’s understandable. But, the project will be interrupting the flow of traffic down one of the main traffic pipelines on the West side of the city. This project is a huge project and has been projected to last into January of 2015. There have been some local media outlets even suggesting that people avoid 34th street during this time.

The thing about this is, there are many local businesses that are along this route that rely on the patronage of people driving this route. cat-man-du is one of these businesses. We want to first say thank you to all of our customers who have ‘braved’ the construction up until this point. We will continue to be offering our award winning service as always. We also want to let our customers know that there is an alternate route to get to our Amarillo location during the construction. Less than a quarter mile South of 34th street on Soncy, there is a parking lot that leads directly to cat-man-du and McAlister’s Deli.

So, next time your headed to cat-man-du to drop off your computer for diagnostics/repairs, pick up your brand new laptop or tablet, or schedule a business networking/server project, you might want to consider this tiny detour to save you the headache of the 34th Street construction. See below for a map of the detour route.

Lenovo Unveils New Chromebook N20 & N20P [VIDEO]

Photo via YouTube Screenshot

Lenovo recently announced the release of two new Chromebooks, the N20P and N20. Both models come with features such as the updated version of Chrome OS, an 11.6-inch monitor and an 8 hour battery life. The only downfall is that Windows apps will not work on these books-including Microsoft Office. But the books will offer a program that is similar to Microsoft Office, Google Docs.

The Chromebooks are designed for optimal performance, security and portability. Chromebooks can be used online or offline to listen to music, edit pictures, and stream movies or TV shows. The books use a “Cloud Drive”, which means that all data is stored using online remote servers. The internal storage is 16GB, but google “Cloud” offers an additional 100GB and will automatically back up your files. In short, your files will be protected from malware and viruses since there is no data stored internally to attack.

While the N20 is more like a traditional notebook, the N20p offers a full 300 degree rotating screen which props up for easy watching and typing. The added touchscreen makes switching from one website to another faster and easier. Starting price for the N20 starts at 279$, which is great for students and workers on the go!

Google’s Motorola Line Purchased By Lenovo For $2.91 Billion [VIDEO]

When Google purchased Motorola, it was losing money hand over fist. Google saw potential in the brand and began the process of rebuilding the integrity of Motorola. First, it discontinued the Motorola ‘dumb’ line. The use of more intuitive software and less gimmicks has been a hit since the release of the Moto X.

Lenovo has been making big waves in the smartphone market, but to this point has kept its sights off of the United States. With this aquisition, you can bet that they will begin to shift their focus when it comes to their lines of smartphones. When you look at the purchase price you will see that Google is taking a giant bath on this deal. They are selling to Lenovo for $2.91 billion only 2 years after purchasing the company for $12.5 billion. That is a huge loss.

While Lenovo is purchasing the company, it’s more of a partnership. Google will still retain the vast majority of patents including “current patent applications and invention disclosures.” This will be an ongoing relationship with Google.

You can bet that all eyes will be on the next line of Motorolas that roll out with Lenovo driving the ship. Lenovo will use it’s current brand of smartphone in the markets where they are already doing very well and bring the Motorola brand to the United States. In markets like China, they may market both.

This deal will also free up Google from conflicts with other partners such as Samsung along with shedding a losing handset business. In the long run this will actually increase profit margins for the search giant.
